There’s the eco-friendly ethos of Miyazaki and stylistic nods to contemporary anime. “The animation was limited,” Stevenson conceded.įor the reboot, the animation team created vivid backgrounds and sci-fi landscapes reminiscent of Moebius (“Heavy Metal”) and Roger Dean (those iconic “Yes” album covers). Even so, she acknowledged its artistic limitations, from its choppy, often sparse movement to its routine use of stock footage. There was a lot that Stevenson liked about the Filmation original, from its action figure tie-ins (“it really felt like playing with toys”) to the crazy characters (“there’s a princess who can turn her legs into a fishtail”). Not long after, Beth Cannon, a DreamWorks development executive and “Nimona” fan, reached out to Stevenson about developing a story pitch. “I’ll never be a blonde,” she said, “but I get to be a blonde as She-Ra.”ĭreamWorks acquired the rights to She-Ra in 2012, along with more than 450 other Classic Media properties, like Casper, Lassie and Voltron: Defender of the Universe. “But we wanted to take what was fun about it and deepen it, and flesh it out.”Īimee Carrero, who was born in the Dominican Republic and grew up in Miami in a predominantly Latino neighborhood, is the voice of the show’s very Nordic-looking lead. “I love the original,” Stevenson, 26, said. And the series tackles some pretty heavy topics, like colonialism, genocide and isolationism, while aiming to maintain the buoyancy of its inspiration. In many ways, “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power,” a new Netflix series from DreamWorks Animation, will be familiar to fans of the campy original. The animals are not usually hunting when they attack humans, Professor Mazzotti said, simply because humans are usually too big. In 2022, there have been 22 bite incidents reported, but these may not all make it on the total count, depending on whether they are determined to be provoked.Įxperts recommend swimming only in designated safe areas and keeping pets on a leash. Since 2010, there have been between six and 15 unprovoked alligator bites reported per year by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. In states with high alligator populations, including Florida and Louisiana, people are at risk anytime they are near a body of water, and they should be as cautious to avoid an attack as they would to prevent drowning, according to Frank Mazzotti, a professor of wildlife ecology and conservation at the University of Florida who has worked with alligators and crocodiles in the Everglades for 40 years. Merda lost his arm, an 80-year-old woman was killed by two alligators after she fell into a pond near her house in Englewood, Fla. Another alligator attack in South Carolina killed an 88-year-old woman in Hilton Head in August. In June, a man was killed and dragged into a retention pond near Myrtle Beach, S.C. In May, a 47-year-old man retrieving Frisbees from a public park’s lake became the first person to die of an alligator attack in Florida since 2019. Merda’s story of his extraordinary ordeal was the latest alligator attack to catch the attention of new organizations this year. Doctors amputated more of his arm because it was infected, he said. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and Manatee County Emergency Medical Services responded.Ī helicopter evacuated him to safety, and he spent three weeks at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Rescue finally came on July 20, when he reached a fence of the Lake Manatee Fish Camp and found a man. He battled the disorientation and tried to keep going, sleeping as best he could when he could, but heading back to the shoreline to keep from further losing his way. Merda struggled to shore, in pain and undoubtedly in shock. It snapped away at the elbow and the alligator swam away with his forearm and hand in its mouth. The animal pulled him under three times, then bent his forearm backward. It latched onto his right forearm, and the two fought. He said he tried to swim away, but the animal was faster. And then he saw the alligator, parallel to him in the water less than two feet away. In Spain, to pick the most extreme example from Europe, 11,100 journalists have lost their jobs since the twin crises began (PR Noticias, 2014).Īs the public and advertisers have stampeded to mobile devices, the traditional technology for measuring audiences and pricing media products has proven unsatisfying for both publishers and advertisers. newspapers saw their combined print and digital advertising revenue fall by 60% in eight years, and newsroom staff fell by 18,300, or 33% (Barthel, 2015). High-cost accountability journalism has suffered mightily since the global economic recession of 2007 caused drastic reductions in print advertising at the same time that audiences and advertisers were migrating to digital media. The economic value and the pricing of accountability journalism are critical today because of the media’s role in democracies as a counterbalance to political and economic power, the so-called Fourth Estate. Accountability journalism, also referred to as “watchdog” or “investigative” journalism, focuses on the demands of the public and will often reveal information that could be embarrassing to an advertiser or, in the case of publicly subsidized media, the political leaders who control media budgets. The public wants to know everything about a product or service offered by an advertiser, but that advertiser may want to share only certain information about the product and about itself. The advertisers and consumers are rivals for information. On the other are advertisers, who want to get their messages to the public. On one side are consumers, who want to be entertained and informed. The media industry is unusual because it operates in what economists call a two-sided market. Now publishers, government, and the public are, in effect, negotiating in a new digital marketplace to establish a price for this valuable information service and who will pay for it. With the loss of advertising and staff cuts, accountability journalism has suffered. It has been subsidized by advertising or by government, so its value to the audience has never been measured in a pure market environment. This costly journalism has never paid for itself. The declining supply of high-quality accountability journalism, also referred to as investigative or watchdog journalism, can be viewed from an economic perspective as a pricing problem. These stories span nations, decades, and all walks of life, but they have one thing in common: after a remarkable pregnancy, an even more unique life went underway. The Economics of Accountability Journalism: What Price Is Right? Yup, some even have extremely different reactions than their own twin does, which is pretty interesting when we start thinking about it. But there are many sets of twins separated at birth, for many reasons and they’ve all had very unique experiences upon finding their twin. Plus, a person might feel lied to by their parents or become more skeptical and closed off. Sure, there’s the adorable antics of Parent Trap, but there’s also a lot of issues with identity, lost time, and making up for that time together that would make the situation incredibly grueling. So while there are some people out there who aren’t attracted to the idea of having a long lost twin, it’s a childhood fantasy for many that carry a lot more complications and difficult feelings that we usually don’t acknowledge. The rest of us are either already twins, actually have a long lost twin, or just don’t want to share the attention with someone who looks so much like them. Most of us can only dream of having a twin out there, somewhere. But instead it just keeps you a distance away from the car in front and you have to steer yourself. So I think my best bet is still to be a good teammate, a good part of this organization.” You know, there’s still nothing said that we can’t continue this in the future. And, you know, this still isn’t just a breakup for the future, either. “They’ve still done so much for me, still doing so much for me this year. So that’s still my plan, be a good teammate, be as helpful as I can to help the whole organization. “I have to be a good teammate, right? Like there’s a lot to be said about that in this industry and I’m sure that’ll go a long way. “That’s gonna be tough, but I don’t know, I think you have to push him,” Gilliland said. Should both Gilliland and Smith end up in the same duel, how does Gilliland convince himself to help push Smith into the Daytona 500?įor Gilliland, being a good teammate still reigns supreme no matter the circumstances. There also comes a curious balance in the Bluegreen Vacations Duel qualifying races on Thursday, Feb. But, you know, at times, you just have to separate the life aspect of it and work. I’ve even ran into (good friend) Harrison Burton, and you’re bound to have stuff happen, whether it’s on the race track, stuff like this. It’s hard to be friends with people that you’re competing against every single week. It’s something that I mean, Marissa, my new wife, talked about. “But I’m sure we’re still gonna be friends. “I haven’t spoke to him since actually came out,” Gilliland said. Smith was still part of Gilliland’s wedding in January after the two were made aware of the team’s 2023 plans. The North Carolina native is also still friends with Smith, who despite booting Gilliland from the ride remains a teammate at Front Row. Gilliland said Thursday “it seems like we’re getting close on some stuff” to fill his current Cup Series gaps. That also extends to the lower-tiered series, preventing him from competing for TRICON, a Toyota team, in the Truck Series. Gilliland is free to explore other opportunities to round out the six races he’s slated to miss, but he can only compete in a Ford per his contract, Gilliland said. “It was just, expectation was running full-time, and then it was just, this is kind of what we have and what we’re gonna have to do. “Really, there wasn’t much talk about it at all, that’s the tough part,” Gilliland said. 38 Ford for another opportunity to learn and improve in 2023. In his rookie season, Gilliland earned a best finish of fourth at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in addition to his second career top 10 at Talladega Superspeedway, where he finished seventh in October. Smith enters as the defending NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion and impressed in his Cup debut at Worldwide Technology Raceway in the No, 17 RFK Racing Ford with a 17th-place finish. The immediate next steps were figuring out what races Gilliland would miss for Smith to pilot the car. “I think the hardest thing was just kind of expecting to be full-time and then just kind of felt like it came out of nowhere.” This was a couple months ago,” Gilliland told reporters in a Thursday media conference. Using a handheld device, the “broad beam light therapy targets the telangiectatic vessels with the goal to decrease the load of inflammatory mediators at the lid margin and ocular surface,” says Sabrina Mukhtar, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania. “It is thought that this treatment is best delivered earlier on, before there is meibomian gland atrophy and more as a preventive measure to ensure dry eye does not worsen over the years.” Intense Pulsed Light TherapyĪn in-office option typically administered in 4 separate sessions, intense pulsed light (IPL) is often recommended for patients with ocular rosacea and meibomian gland dysfunction. Yet another lid-warming device is the iLux 2 (Alcon), a “handheld device that heats the glands, and as the provider is going along the lid margin, the impacted content is manually squeezed from the glands.”ĭr Al-Hashimi notes that patients may not feel a dramatic difference after in-office lid warming, even with objective improvement in their meibomian gland dysfunction. “The clinician then removes the strips and manually expresses the glands using a metal paddle. The glands are sandwiched between 2 very pliable heaters that gently evacuate the inspissated material from the glands,” explains Dr Matossian, who says she undergoes this procedure herself annually.Īnother device, TearCare ® (Sight Sciences), is similar, except that you place an adhesive heating strip is placed on the outside of the upper and lower eyelids, and it heats the glands for 15 minutes, says Dr Matossian. “The device heats the meibomian glands from the inside and outside of the eyelids. 5,6 With LipiFlow ® (Johnson & Johnson), the clinician places a single-use activator inside each eye and turns them on, then removes and discards them at the end of the 12-minute procedure. There are 3 in-office devices that involve heating the meibomian gland and evacuating the impacted meibum. These procedures “can be very helpful in cases where meibomian gland dysfunction is the main contributing factor to their dry eye symptoms, especially for patients who struggle to find time to consistently perform warm compress treatments at home,” explains Dr Al-Hashimi. For many of these patients, multiple treatment approaches are warranted and may include a combination of at-home and in-office therapies. Other individuals with DED may simply wish to explore various options to replace or complement pharmaceutical therapies and home-based treatments. 4 “Even using preservative-free artificial tears may pose a hardship, as these patients are often already on multiple medications and may have difficulty maintaining a frequent drop regimen.” “In particular, patients on chronic glaucoma medications frequently have concordant dry eye exacerbated by repeated administration of preservative-containing drops, especially those with benzalkonium chloride,” according to Angie E, Wen, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, and faculty member at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. Patients using eye drops for other conditions may wish to manage their DED without drops. 3 Forgetfulness can also be a factor, especially if “drops have to be used multiple times per day, and especially if there are many different drops – the more complex the drop regimen, the greater the probability of noncompliance.” “Part of it may be inability to get to a pharmacy to pick up meds or inability to squeeze a bottle or tilt the chin up to put drops in – perhaps due to arthritis, stroke, or cervical spine issues, for example,” explains Cynthia Matossian, MD, FACS, founder of Matossian Eye Associates, president of the American College of Eye Surgeons, and lead author of a recent review regarding DED treatments beyond artificial tears. And discomfort isn’t the only reason for discontinuation. If the drops are causing discomfort, and discomfort is what the patient is attempting to resolve, there’s a strong chance they’re going to discontinue drops on their own. Patients may believe the consequences of noncompliance are mild. Let’s face it - dry eye isn’t a terminal illness. But long-term adherence to a regular treatment regimen is often a challenge for patients with any chronic disease. |
